Mini Clubman 1275 GT, vintage 1969-1980. Created as the so-called replacement for the Mini Cooper S, the 1275GT was a "poor-man"'s sports car, taking the 1275cc engine, not from the Cooper, but from the less powerful Austin/Morris 1300. It was then fitted with a single HS4 (1,50") SU carburetter. Producing 40-odd BHP, it is nowhere near the performance of the Cooper S, if anything, it's squared-off front make it less aerodynamic than the standard "round-nose" car. But it has the first ever tachometer fitted to the Mini, with 3-dials facia in front of the driver, leather-bound 3-spoke steering wheel and leather interior. Following the launch of the Metro in 1980, the Clubman range (Mini Clubman and 1275GT) were dropped altogether while the estate and van body still produced to finish excess bodyworks until 1983. The 1275GT once touted as the replacement Cooper S, except it was not. However, it is proven to be a quite powerful yet economical engine.
